Conclusion of the 2024 Tales of the South Pacific Voyage
Embarking on a journey through the South Pacific with Cruise Specialists was nothing short of magical. Over 51 days, Holland America’s Zaandam took us across some of the world’s most breathtaking islands, filled with rich cultural encounters, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical landscapes. From Aitutaki, Cook Islands to Taiohae, Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia, each stop revealed a unique facet of Polynesian paradise, making it a trip of a lifetime. It's always difficult after such an experience to leave this paradise, not knowing when we will return.
Here’s a look back at some of the incredible highlights along the way.
Rarotonga and Aitutaki, Cook Islands: Hidden Gems
Our first glimpse of French Polynesia began in the Cook Islands and Aitutaki and Rarotonga, with their lush, mountainous interiors and inviting beaches, that were a perfect blend of culture and nature. We enjoyed scenic drives around the islands where possible, discovering local crafts at the docks, appreciating the laid-back beach vibes. Aitutaki, with its stunning lagoon, was a visual paradise. We stopped to swim in its turquoise waters, along with many other passengers who all took a taxi or Uber to this well-known beach.
One such taxi driver was happy to share his numerous connections to just about everyone who lives in Aitutaki and assured us that if we should be in any trouble just to mention his name and everything would be taken care of.
Bora Bora: The Jewel of the South Pacific
Bora Bora was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our journey. Famed for its overwater bungalows and breathtaking lagoons, this island is a true icon of tropical paradise. We spent the day exploring Matira Beach, snorkeling among neon-bright fish and stingrays, and soaking in the stunning views of Mount Otemanu. An unforgettable part of the experience was the sailaway celebration, where the skies turned shades of pink and orange over Bora Bora’s picturesque lagoon.
Raiatea: Society Islands
On Raiatea, we delved into Polynesian history and culture. Known as the “Sacred Island,” Raiatea is home to one of the oldest and most important cultural sites in Polynesia – the Marae Taputapuatea. To reach this sacred destination one rides on a Le Truck – the open-air rattling transportation that is not to be missed, unless you have back problems. In that case, a Holland America Line tour in a comfortable bus would be a much better idea. From there, some guests journeyed to the neighboring island of Taha’a, famous for its vanilla farms and fragrant landscapes. The Vanilla Island Tour allowed guests to witness traditional vanilla production and sample some of the world’s finest vanilla beans. It was not unusual to see guests walking by after a quick stop in the local market carrying a famous French baguette in their arms.
Moorea: The Heart of French Polynesia
Prior to sailing to Papeete, we sailed into the Opunohu Bay of the nearby island of Moorea, a paradise known for its dramatic, jagged mountains and pristine beaches. We explored Moorea’s Opunohu Bay by boat, where turquoise waters met towering emerald peaks. The waters are so clear that the corals and the sand, with fish swimming between them, could be seen from the boats as we crossed the lagoon. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear lagoons, we encountered vibrant coral reefs and an array of marine life, including the opportunity to swim with friendly stingrays, black-tipped sharks and colorful tropical fish. Touching these gentle rays and petting them is truly a very special feeling of bonding with wildlife, a moment to be thankful for this special opportunity.
Tahiti: Papeete’s Bustling Charm
Papeete is Tahiti’s vibrant capital. There was a lot of excitement on board because everyone knew about the exotic markets, colorful street vendors, and stunning waterfront promenade. We were docked over the weekend. Sunday is a very quiet day; streets are empty, and shops are closed. Saturday was the day to visit a very special location - the Papeete Market, where local artisans display beautiful Tahitian crafts and there is plenty of opportunity for colorful and incredible photos! How can one resist the many varieties of flowers and the leis? How can one resist the purchase of just one more sarong? Rainbows could be seen in the clouds that got hung up on the top of the hills behind the city. Our ship set up outdoor dining on the Seaside Lido for all the passengers, tables covered with white tablecloths, and an extra special sunset that lit up the whole city! The night ended with traditional performances by a local dance group.
Marquesas Islands: A Remote Wilderness
The Marquesas Islands offered a more rugged and untouched landscape. Here, we visited Nuku Hiva, where towering cliffs create a dramatic backdrop to the island’s ancient archaeological sites. In the heat, some guests trekked through valleys dotted with stone tikis and mysterious petroglyphs, learning about the island’s ancient Polynesian heritage. For the rest of us, we encountered rich traditions at the dock and appreciated the raw natural beauty as we made our way along the main road, encountering a few dogs, many stone tikis and our favorite restaurant, a hidden gem and a location to enjoy a cold beer and a local pizza with friends.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
After 51 days of exploring the beauty of the South Pacific, we returned to the United States with hearts full of memories and an endless appreciation for the incredible cultures and landscapes we encountered. Each destination left its mark, and we left with new friends and unforgettable experiences. This 51-day Tales of the South Pacific voyage was a journey of discovery and wonder, offering a glimpse into some of the most pristine and culturally rich islands in the world. Whether it was the allure of Tahiti’s lagoons, the traditions of the Marquesas, or the friendly faces of Fiji, every stop was a reminder of the incredible beauty and diversity of the South Pacific. We feel blessed.
